Acadia National Park: Where the Mountains Meet the Maine Coast

Acadia is what happens when glaciers sculpt pink granite mountains and then drop them straight into the Atlantic. The first national park east of the Mississippi packs an absurd amount into a small footprint on Maine's Mount Desert Island: 27 miles of ocean-hugging road, 158 miles of trail (including ladder-and-rung climbs that feel borrowed from the Alps), 45 miles of car-free carriage roads built by John D. Rockefeller Jr., and — from October through early March — the first sunrise in the United States, from the top of Cadillac Mountain. Know before you go: Acadia sits on Mount Desert Island with Bar Harbor as its lively gateway — about 3 hours from Portland, 4.5 from Boston. You'll need a park pass, and in 2026 one specific reservation: driving Cadillac Summit Road requires a $6 vehicle reservation from recreation.gov between May 20 and October 25, with 30% of slots released 90 days out and the rest at 10 a.m. ET two days ahead — sunrise slots are the hot ticket. The free Island Explorer shuttle handles the rest of the park beautifully in season. October foliage is peak everything: color, crowds, and lodging prices.

What's the perfect Acadia day?

Start before dawn with a Cadillac Summit reservation and watch the sun hit Frenchman Bay's islands — in fall and winter you're first in the country to see it. Drive the Park Loop Road clockwise: Sand Beach, Thunder Hole (time it for a rising mid-tide, when the boom actually booms), Otter Cliff. Late morning, climb the Beehive — a short, thrilling iron-rung route up a 450-foot cliff face — or the gentler Ocean Path if ladders aren't your love language. Reward yourself with popovers and tea on the lawn at Jordan Pond House, a park tradition since the 1890s, then walk the pond loop under the rounded twins called the Bubbles. Golden hour belongs to the carriage roads: rent bikes in Bar Harbor and roll broken-stone lanes over Rockefeller's hand-built granite bridges.

How do the Cadillac reservations actually work?

Two windows: 30% of each day's reservations drop 90 days ahead on a rolling basis, and the remaining 70% drop at 10 a.m. Eastern two days before. Sunrise reservations (a separate category with a 90-minute entry window) sell out fastest — set an alarm for the two-day drop. Daytime slots have a 30-minute entry window and go easier. No reservation? Cadillac's summit is a terrific hike via the North Ridge Trail, and Ocean Path sunrise at Otter Cliff is nobody's consolation prize.

Can I do this with a dog?

Acadia is the dog-trip national park: leashed dogs are welcome on about 100 miles of trails and all 45 miles of carriage roads — nearly everything except the iron-rung routes, a few beaches in summer, and ranger-led programs. Bar Harbor is equally soft-hearted about dogs on patios. This is the park where the whole family, fur included, actually hikes together.

Bringing kids?

Tailor-made: Thunder Hole's spray, tidepooling at Ship Harbor, flat loops at Jordan Pond, bikes on car-free carriage roads, and the Beehive as a rite of passage for fearless tweens (there's a walk-up descent so nobody has to down-climb the rungs). The Island Explorer shuttle means you can bail from anywhere when little legs quit.

Stay safe

The ocean does the damage here: rogue waves have swept people from the rocks at Thunder Hole and Schoodic Point in heavy swell, so respect closures and keep kids back from wet granite. The rung trails (Beehive, Precipice) are genuinely exposed and one-way for a reason — skip them in rain, and note the Precipice closes most summers for nesting peregrine falcons. Fog rolls in fast; carry a layer even in August.

Do you need a reservation for Acadia National Park?

Only for one road: driving Cadillac Summit Road requires a $6 vehicle reservation on recreation.gov from May 20 to October 25, 2026, on top of your park pass. The rest of the park — Park Loop Road included — needs no reservation, and the free Island Explorer shuttle covers most destinations in season.

When can you see the first sunrise in the US from Cadillac Mountain?

From roughly early October through early March, Cadillac's 1,530-foot summit catches the first sunlight in the country thanks to its height and easterly position. In midsummer, points farther Down East beat it by moments — but nobody on the summit at dawn has ever felt shortchanged. Sunrise vehicle reservations sell out fastest.

Is the Beehive Trail dangerous?

It's a real exposed climb — iron rungs and ladders up a 450-foot cliff — but thousands of visitors do it safely every week in good conditions. Go up-only (descend the Bowl Trail), skip it in rain or with young kids, and take the Ocean Path instead if heights aren't your thing. The views are nearly identical; the adrenaline is optional.
